Multi-tasking is an invaluable skill
Says work placement student Holly Moore…..
I graduated from Leeds University last year with a degree in English and French and after spending a year working abroad I returned to the UK eager to begin a career in media.
My previous work history was in teaching English as a foreign language, so in order to change direction I began looking for placements to increase my knowledge and understanding of the industry. This is where the Souter PR team came in.
I am now coming to the end of my two-week placement at Souter PR and the experience has been extremely valuable.
It has been a very busy fortnight with a few firsts for me, including getting to talk to the editors of big-name titles and seeing how projects for household names such as Warburtons come together (of course everyone still found time for a festive mince pie on Friday. It is Christmas after all!)
I have seen first-hand the creativity, dedication and time that goes into every PR campaign and how they are tailored specifically to each individual company. The range of clients, brands, contacts and campaigns is vast and it was really interesting to see how everything works together. Multi-tasking, I have learnt, is an invaluable and very necessary skill!
To echo the advice of Jennifer who was here before me, in today’s competitive job market, work experience is highly beneficial. It is a crucial part of getting to know your industry, learning the little tricks of the trade that will stand you in good stead for the ‘real thing’ and ultimately, discovering whether or not it’s something you’re really suited to.
I will leave Souter PR more determined than ever, so I must say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone here and wish everyone every success in 2012.
